Side notes: This manga translation isn't a new project but as it has been reformed (original translation has been changed) I decided to pick it up... as there is still some time before the official translation starts (and it may take more than couple of years it to land our library so I'm not hurry and I like to see if it is good enough to buy to my small collections.^-^). The main story of the manga (prequel) received also a TV anime but just like with the original manga I've not seen it. I never really got into this series but let's still see what there is to be found.
The art is on good level (as you can expect) and the first four chapters tell the story from another point of views than the main story. Still as such they are a bit less composed compared the main story and do serve as special chapters (oneshot').

Zero Kiryuu (錐生 零)

Yuuki's childhood friend, Zero is also a Guardian and likewise on the disciplinary committee. Yuuki has been taking care of him as her little brother since he was brought into their home (the Headmaster's). His family, a line of vampire hunters, was murdered by the pure blood vampire Shizuka Hio when he was young. He harbors a deep hatred for vampires and claims to have taken on the role of Guardian to learn to hunt them better.
Yuuki Cross (黒主 優姫)
Age: 15–16 years old
Height: 152cm
The adoptive daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, Yuuki is a member of the school's disciplinary committee (public morals committee in Japanese), which is the 'front' for the Guardians. Ten years prior to the events of "Vampire Knight," Yuuki was attacked by a vampire, but was rescued by Kaname. She has lost all memory of her life before the attack, and Headmaster Cross took her in as his own daughter. Yuuki loves Kaname, and even though she has witnessed his vampiric nature when he bit Ruka, she still couldn't stop loving him. However, she has also started to let Zero, a childhood friend, drink her blood, hoping to save him from madness. Yuuki is cheerful and easygoing, and thanks to her work as a Guardian she is good at keeping her cool in sticky situations. There have been hints that she is special, given that vampires are especially drawn to her blood. Her weapon of choice is the "Artemis Rod," an extensible staff she received from Headmaster Cross.
Hanabusa Aidou (藍堂 英)
Nicknamed "Idol" by the Day Class girls. Along with his cousin Akatsuki Kain, Hanabusa Aido is known among the Night Class as "Kaname-sama's right hand," and he has a fierce admiration for Kaname. He possesses an upper-class vampire ability to control ice. He knows that Zero is a vampire, but keeps quiet about it. Aido can seem cheerful and friendly one moment, and cold and vindictive the next. He is not fond of Yuuki, but he tolerates her because Kaname cares for her. He is the only one to have witnessed Kaname kill Shizuka, but Aidou still looks up to Kaname and wants to lend Kaname his power to help find who killed Kaname's parents. Even though Kaname declined his offer so that Aidou wouldn't put himself in danger, Aidou is now researching behind Kaname's back in books and records to try to find who could possibly have been enemies of the Kurans and to find Kaname's secrets.
Sayori Wakaba (若葉 沙頼)
Age: 15 - 16 years old
Height: 155 cm
Yuuki's dorm-mate and best friend since junior high, Yuuki often refers to her as Yori-chan. Yori seems to be one of the few girls who is not interested in the Night Class. She finds them a bit scary and stated that she would prefer someone from the day class. Yori is also very observant, as she notices a lot of things that happen to Yuuki, especially when she gets hurt or is very depressed.
Yori's part in the story is relatively small. She spends a lot of time worried about Yuki not getting enough sleep and having nightmares. She teases Yuuki when Ichiru reveals that Zero has feelings for Yuuki and confirms Yori's suspicions, although the whole matter isn't clear to Yuuki. Yori finds out that Yuuki is a vampire after Aidou protected her from a Level D vampire, who served Rido. Despite that fact, Yori still accepts Yuki and appeared to be more worried over the fact that she would lose her best friend. Because of the recent events at Cross Academy, she is taken to a safe place by Aidou on Kaname's orders. After the attack is over, she defends Aido when the other day class girls are afraid of him.
Seiren (星煉)
A student of the Night Class, she is Kaname's unofficial bodyguard. She is usually the first to defend Kaname from anyone she regards as a threat. She is highly skilled at various martial arts as well as ninja-like weapons. Seiren can seem cold, but is very loyal. She is a very quiet and enigmatic character who only speaks when necessary.
