Synopsis: Punpun Onodera is a normal 11-year-old boy living in Japan. Hopelessly idealistic and romantic, Punpun begins to see his life take a subtle—though nonetheless startling—turn to the adult when he meets the new girl in his class, Aiko Tanaka. It is then that the quiet boy learns just how fickle maintaining a relationship can be, and the surmounting difficulties of transitioning from a naïve boyhood to a convoluted adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun realizes another thing: those whom he looked up to were not as impressive as he once thought.

As his problems increase, Punpun's once shy demeanor turns into voluntary reclusiveness. Rather than curing him of his problems and conflicting emotions, this merely intensifies them, sending him down the dark path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age saga.

It received a Jury Recommendation at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009.

Side notes: This manga is also something that I don't like to read. I had different hopes as I read the synopsis and saw the cover images but after reading some more and character descriptions, it all made me change my mind where I was stepping into. Nothing leisure but more like growing up story turned into a runaway story with violence at present. Oh and it was no intention of mine to pick up a second story from Asano Inio today. It's just that their genres go hand-in-hand with today's theme (Hallucination > Dreams) and I saw this on the list when searching something similar to add on here on Extras (- well that was after I pushed Ultra heaven away due of its long hiatus and 'cause there were too many similar mangas on my list).

P.S. More than one reviewer of this manga made it clear: You can't like the characters. So if feeling so you're not alone with this feeling.

Main characters

Punpun Onodera (小野寺 プンプン)

Punpun is a socially awkward young boy whose age of innocence ends with his parents' divorce. As he continues to mature and interact with people around him as the average boy would, such as dealing with crushes and getting into mischief with his classmates, he begins to learn how crushing and harsh reality can be, and struggles to find his purpose in the world.

Aiko Tanaka (田中 愛子)

An eccentric girl who is the main love interest of Onodera Punpun throughout the manga.
