Side notes: Nope, I've not read this manga... yet. I've come across the anime though and I tried to watch it... but no go. I got totally bored and well the genre isn't my favorite type either. So maybe the manga is better for me. Before that, I started to read UQ holder without even knowing that these two mangas are related. No wonder that I felt that there was some kind of pre-story which I didn't know anything about.^-^ But back to this story...Well the setting, it's not my favorite type premise... too much cliche in every way (but do remember that this was published 2003-2012 so there is plenty time for story to develop).

Also I found the charas pretty much too stereotypical that it made me yawn... and skip some parts just to get moving.... but I'm also tired so don't mind me. Also this isn't manga for me 'cause although women a nice to watch I'm not searching fanservice.>.< But there are huge amount of reader liking this one to bits so even though I'm bored there is a good chance that you might like it.^-^

P.S Character descriptions are partly same with the UQ holder due of the same characters that are present in both mangas.

Main characters

Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell (エヴァンジェリン・A.K.・マクダウェル)
Seat Number: 26
Born: Sometime during the Hundred Year War
Blood type: unknown
Likes: the tea that Chachamaru makes, Japanese scenery, Go
Dislikes: garlic, class
Clubs: Go Club, Tea Ceremony Club
Hair: blonde
Eyes: blue
Height: 130 cm (4'3")
Measurements: 67-48-63

Evangeline A.K. McDowell is the 26th student in Japanese alphabetical order of class 2/3-A, she is actually a centuries-old vampire cursed to remain at the school by Nagi Springfield, the father of her teacher Negi Springfield. Initially an antagonist for Negi due to his father's actions, she eventually becomes an important teacher and guide for the young mage and his allies as they fight and search for his missing father. However, Eva remains a cruel, powerful mage in her own right, yet with the sensitivities of her former human life.

Negi Springfield (ネギ・スプリングフィールド)
Negi Springfield is the teacher of Mahora Girls' Jr High School class 3-A (formley 2-A) with formely 31 students, now reduced to 30. Negi Springfield is the son of master mage Nagi Springfield, famously known as the legendary "Thousand Master" and princess Akira of the Ostian Empire in the magic world. At present, Negi has formed 11 temporarily pactio with his students (Asuna, Nodoka, Setuna, Konoka, Yue, Haruna, Chisame, Kazumi, Kaede, Kuu Fei, and Chachamaru) and 1 temporarily pactio with Theo, which gives him the artifact that allow him to use any of his partner's artifact.

Negi specialize in Wind spells and Lightning spells (his father's specialty) though he is initially lacking in battle experience. He later trains under Ku Fei in Martial Arts to make up for his weakness in close combat, advancing very quickly (even learning how to do instant movement, otherwise known as Shundou), and applies a strong magical barrier around himself to avoid damaging his frail body. He eventually becomes a master of using delayed spells as a battle tactic. Due to the training he had with Evangeline and Jack Rakan, his magic and combat capability increases exponentially. Negi also learns and improves upon Evangeline's "Magia Erebea," which absorb offensive spells into his own body. He also came up with a new spell: "Spell Synthesis: Lightning God Lance Titan Slayer" which is a new high class lightning spell. Negi even manage to use Magia Erebea's ultimate ability by using a magic circle that can stop and absorb the enemy's attack whether it is magical or spiritual attack and use it against them, which even Evangeline herself could not master it. In the latest chapter, it is shown that Magia Erebea marks have begin to spread all over Negi's body and that Negi has formed a temporarily pactio with Shiori, one of Fate's subordinates.

His aim is to become a Magister Magi (master mage) like his father and find his father who is currently missing.

Nodoka Miyazaki (宮崎 のどか)
Seat Number: 27
Birthday: May 10, 1988
Blood Type: O
Hair: Dark blue
Eyes: Pink
Likes: Being surrounded by books, Sorting books
Dislikes: Males
Clubs: Library Coordination Committee, Library Monitor, Library Expedition Club

Class 2/3-A's resident bookworm, Nodoka is of the quiet but kind variety, harboring romantic feelings for her homeroom teacher, Negi Springfield. She has since confessed her feelings to him, but not much progress in their relationship has been made; they still remain friends. Nodoka is the second person to establish a probationary contract with Negi and gain a pactio card (it occurred during the field trip to Kyoto). Her artifact is a book that can show one's thoughts in picture diary format.

Setsuna Sakurazaki (桜咲 刹那)
Setsuna is a Shinmeiryu swordswoman from Kyoto who was taken in by Eishun Konoe, Konoka's father and the leader of the Kyoto Mage Association. She is childhood friends with Konoka and her protector.

Setsuna spends the beginning of the series being relatively cold to Konoka, wishing to protect her from the shadows due to not forgiving herself for being unable to save Konoka when she almost drowned when they were kids. She does eventually open up to Konoka after the Kyoto arc and begins calling her "Oujo-sama" and "Kono-chan".

Setsuna's pactio, Sica Shishikushiro is a wakizashi which she can summon and multiply at will to strike targets like missiles. Due to her training she's also skilled in anti-demon arts and is the one who taught Negi how to create shikigami from paper.

Setsuna is a hanyou like Koutaro, in particular a crow. She was expelled from her people because white wings are considered a bad omen, and it was implied by Evangeline that she is an albino using hair dye and contact lenses to appear human.

A running gag within the series is that Setsuna and Konoka appear to have romantic feelings for one another, yet Setsuna will deny it whenever she and Konoka are stumbled upon in romantic situations or asked about her preference.

Asuna Kagurazaka (神楽坂 明日菜)

Real/Previous Name: Asuna Vesperina Theotanasia Enteofushia
Birthdate: April 21, 1988
Zodiac: Taurus
Seat No.: 8
Room No.: 643
Hair: Ginger
Eyes: Green and Blue (only blue in SHAFT's Negima!? projects)
Blood type: B
Three sizes: B83-W57-H84
Favorite things: Takahata-sensei, cool men
Dislikes: kids, studying
Other facts: Orphaned at a young age, member of the Baka Rangers (Baka Red), has a job as a newspaper delivery girl, has an incredible kick and overall battling abilities

As one of the main characters of the series, Asuna has been known to have quite a short temper and frequently her actions are a bit rash, but at the same time, has some aspects that display her maturity, especially when it comes to doing the right thing. Although at first she really detests Negi, over time she becomes like a big sister role model to him, as she does resemble Negi's cousin, Nekane, in a way. Her background is somewhat of a mystery, since she was orphaned at a young age. Yet, as she learns more about Negi, some things do occur that suggest clues to her past. One of the few students who has an job outside of the school. Although she isn't exactly a bright student, she is shown to have strong fighting skills and is a compassionate person when it comes to people that are important to her.

Yue Ayase (綾瀬 夕映)
Seat Number: 4
Born on: 16th of November, 1988
Blood Type: AB
Hair: Violet
Eyes: Violet
Likes: Reading
Dislikes: Studying at school
Clubs: Children's Literature Research Society, Philosophy Research Society, Library Expedition Club

Yue is Nodoka's best friend, and is often seen around both her and Haruna. She's short and at times has a blunt way of speaking to people, but is generally a friendly person. She likes to read but (ironically) doesn't like to study, and is one of the Baka Rangers (a name for the 5 worst students in Negi's class). When she finds out that Negi is a mage she gets excited about learning magic herself.

At first she shows no romantic interest in Negi, but as time goes by she finds herself developing a crush on him. However she doesn't want to hurt Nodoka, so she tries to keep it bottled up as much as she can. She's supportive of Nodoka and wishes her the best of luck when it comes to her and Negi's relationship.

Yue became the 5th person in Negi's class to make a Pactio with him, following Asuna, Nodoka, Setsuna, and Konoka.

Chisame Hasegawa (長谷川 千雨)
Seat Number: 25
Born on: February 2, 1989
Hair: Peach
Eyes: Pinkish red
Likes: Small, powerful devices (e.g. sub-notepad PCs)
Dislikes: Useless people, unexpected events
Clubs: None
Notes: Eyesight 1.2, very good with computers

Chisame Hasegawa is student number twenty-five in the class. She is grumpy, unsocial, and views her classmates as idiots and freaks, citing that it is obvious that Chachamaru and Mana don't belong in the school and that 10-year-old Negi teaching the class does not make any sense. However, as much as Chisame avoids any and all attention in the real world, in the privacy of her own room, she takes on the persona of Chiu, a famous Net Idol, devoted to cosplay. Although she is, fitting with her character, rather disturbed by the idea of other students being openly attracted to and/or in love with 10-year-old Negi, she eventually becomes very close with Negi as he convinces her to interact with the real world. After finding out about the existence of magic, she reluctantly becomes part of Negi's group.

Chisame is an extremely skilled with computers, and she is able to hack into large databases with minimal effort. After forming a pactio with Negi, she gains the artifact, Sceptrum Virtuale, a heart-topped staff that allows her to actually enter cyberspace as a physical realm, upon which she can internally hack into systems. She can allow others to enter with her while their bodies stay in the real world. She is assisted by virtual "spirits", Kincha, Hanpe, Konnya, Chikuwafu, Negi, Daiko, and Shirataki, who can communicate with her while she is nearby an electronic device. They can watch out for any viral attacks, and manipulate data, which allows her to increase the ranking of her site. However, her Pactio ability has the drawback of being near-useless when not connected to the internet, and her spirits disappear when her laptop's batteries are exhausted. Her Pactio has an additional ability which she uses more often, which allows her to transform into various Net-idol cosplay outfits.

Albert Chamomile (アルベール・カモミール)
A perverted lingerie stealing (once again a throw back to the typical manga male stock character archetype), chain-smoking, talking ermine, (though he has a long, and prehensile tail), that Negi freed from a trap when he was five years old. Since then, Chamo has been going to Negi whenever he ran into trouble.

Chamo cares strongly for Negi and will fight to protect him, but he is not above using him to try to make a fast buck. Chief among those methods is attempting to make probationary contracts between Negi and as many of his students as possible, since the act nets him 50,000 Ermine Dollars per contract.

Chamo often acts as Negi's trusty advisor in most things, though there are times his judgement and/or advice leaves much to be desired. He is skillful at analyzing dangerous situation and coming up with countermeasure when most of the others are in state of panic, but his plan usually have big flaws in it, a point that he often admits blankly. He is also quite good at analyzing individual strength and character, and puts them in good use during times of need.

He normally suffers Asuna's wrath whenever his schemes are discovered or he is caught in one of his perverted acts.

As a side note, being turned into an ermine is one of the punishments that Negi's magic academy gives, however Chamo is not a mage turned into an ermine, but actually a type of elf/fairy/Cait Sith (which he says he is very proud of).

Side characters: Adding them later today.
