Synopsis: This gag manga is the most popular series in Asahi Shogakusei newspaper and became a huge hit when adapted into the anime series "Nintama Rantarou" on NHK TV. The time is the Sengoku period, and the characters are ninjas-in-training who have entered Ninjutsu Gakuen. Their sights are set on becoming first-class ninjas, but they usually end up creating chaos. This series is perfect for treating students who are wearied from studying.

Side notes: Only one chapter is out at the moment so it doesn't give a lots of info but there is always the anime version that has been going on at least almost as long as the manga itself (I think... checked: starting year 1993 and still ongoing).

The main character. A kind, energetic and goofy red-head who wears a pair of distinctive big, round glasses. His father is a ninja and his mother a mostly retired kunoichi, and he entered the Ninjutsu Academy to become a ninja himself as well. However, his dream is to become a first-rate ninja instead of a mostly unemployed one like his father. This might be a difficult goal to reach, since like the rest of Class 1-Ha he's easily distracted and mostly focused on goofing off and having fun together with his best friends Kirimaru and Shibei instead of studying.
As a member of the famously unlucky Health Committee, he's often the victim of bad luck of all kinds.
Kirimaru Settsuno (摂津の きり丸)

An orphan who entered Ninjutsu Academy to become able to make a living as a ninja, he's been best friends with Rantarou and Shinbei ever since meeting them while enrolling. Since he lost his family to a war before the start of the series, he's been making a living working several part-time jobs. Entering the academy hasn't changed this, and he still works several jobs on the side and has earned the nickname "Genius Part-timer". He has a great head for business, an even greater love for money and is very proud to call himself an extreme skinflint. He can also make out the sound of dropped coins from great distances and will instantly take off in the direction of the sound whenever he hears it.
Since entering the academy, he's been staying with Doi-sensei during school holidays.
Shinbei Fukutomi (福富 しんべヱ)

A kind and friendly boy who's the son of a rich merchant, Shinbei quickly became best friends with Rantarou and Kirimaru at the beginning of the series when they all entered Ninjutsu Academy together.
Not the fastest of thinkers, and as he loves to eat he's rather pudgy as a result. He's unusually strong, however, and has an amazing sense of smell that's stronger than a dog's - which he usually uses to sniff out food. His constantly runny nose is his trademark, and since his snot is extremely sticky he often uses it as a weapon.
