Synopsis: Riding the bus one day, Sakurakouji Sakura looks out the window to see people being burned alive with a blue fire and a boy her age who's unharmed and standing over the people. She comes back to the site the next day and there are no corpses or evidence of any kind of murder, just a small fire. She then goes to class to find there's a new transfer student, Oogami Rei, who looks exactly like the boy she saw before and wears a black glove only on his left hand. Oogami is a Code Breaker, one who "does not exist." He is a seemingly cold-blooded killer who follows the principle of "an eye for an eye," to "use evil against evil." Convinced that killing is not right, Sakurakouji sets out to stop him and penetrate his icy heart.

Side notes: Yup anime pick again.XDD But on second though I's really wondering why I liked it so much until I saw the magic word: Kamijyo Akimine. I'm not humongous fan but I liked the series by her which I've already mentioned today: Samurai Deeper Kyo. I like her art style and way to tell stories so if I'm going to bang it more you get dulled by me.^-^ But about this manga it's well above the average manga in the sphere of a good manga by most of the readers on MAL and Baka.
P.S. After Ao no Exorcist anything done with blue flames makes me go back to Rin and no-one else.*-*
Main characters
Toki Fujiwara (藤原刻)
Code: 04 of the Code Breakers. Toki's power revolves around magnetism, but later on he also exhibits the ability of mercury manipulation. When he loses his power, he takes the form of his younger self. He's the joker of the group, always fond of teasing people and has a propensity to tell outrageous lies (which fool no one but Sakura), but gets serious when it comes to his sister, Nenene's, safety.
He's extremely popular with females and has a strong liking for breasts. He follows the Hammurabi code variation of "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and the hammer of justice for the wicked."
It's later revealed that Toki and Nenene aren't blood siblings. When Nenene met Toki for the first time she was introduced as his older sister. The reason of that was because when Toki was born his magnetism was too powerful so they had to lock it up in "Pandoras box."
The Prime Minister thought this was a waste and Toki is also "The Joker" of Eden. He is able to defeat a Rare Kind with his power. Nenene is a spare, another "Joker"
Nenene was born by using "the apples of Eden" to create a child to hold the power. As a special power user's DNA greatly affects normal ones, Nenenes left eye was replaced with Toki's right eye. And so, Toki was given Nenene's left eye. After that she started to look like Toki and was able to use the power. Nenene was merely a vessel and Toki got his power taken away from him.
Toki, however, couldn't know any of this and was told that only the older sister Nenene inherited the magnetism power from their father. Toki was thus undervalued and attempted to run away from him, until Nenene transferred half of her power (and accordingly, half of her life) to Toki to make him equally special. That's why Toki could use the power of magnetism before opening "Pandora's box."
Later, she died protecting him from the Code:Name Saechika. (Toki thought the Re:Code Kouji was the one who killed Nenene for a long time, but it's later revealed that it was actually Saechika.)
Nenene is still alive though and while she is in her lost state she doesn't know who Toki is. (Her mind is going back to her childhood). To her, Toki is still a little child. Still, Toki vows to protect Nenene with his life.
It's later revealed that Toki is not his real name, but rather a name he adopted when he became a Code:Breaker.
Rui Hachiouji (八王子 泪)
The Code:05; she's hailed as one of the most powerful Code:Breakers. At first, Sakura thought she was a man, but she is actually a woman. Rui acts very much like a tomboy but is truthfully immensely shy. She is one of the few to know Shibuya's true identity and often uses this secret to blackmail him. Her addition to the Code of Hammurabi is "and the punishment of death for evil".
Rui's ability allows her to manipulate her shadow to defend or to attack by slicing others shadows (the damage done to the shadow becomes real). Her most powerful technique is "Empress Paradox", a shadow monster which envelops her body and can even eats up Rui herself. When Rui loses her power, she becomes a mermaid.
She does not get along well with Heike in particular, as in the past she was a Re:Code under the command of "The Seeking One". Her reason for leaving them was because "the thing she needed to protect wasn't there"; this is later revealed as a request from "The Seeking One" to protect Ogami should Eden come after him in the event the Code:Emperor's soul in his left arm awaken. She was closest to Kouji and Yukihina, and once even took a picture together with them. Even though now she refers to "The Seeking One" as a monster, she still has deep respect for him.
Further revelations show that Rui belongs to a family of four, all of them (Rui, her parents, and her little brother) being power users. For this reason, her parents were murdered and the incident was covered up as an accident. Rui believed her brother was also dead, until the Code:Emperor showed her that he couldn't summon her brother's soul from hell, which meant he was still alive. Later, it turned out that her brother is the Code:Closer, Saechika.
Masaomi Heike (平家 将臣)
A classmate of Sakura's, and the Student Council Secretary. For no reason at all he would set up a table in the middle of a hallway and drink some tea. He seems to enjoy bondage, as he constantly carries a book around with the cover having the woman in a kinbaku. He is later to be revealed as a Code: Breaker as well, under the code-name 02 (and with this all the even Code: Breakers have been introduced: 2, 4, and 6). Like Rei he also uses the same Code of Hammurabi, but instead of Evil for Evil he replaces it with "and eternal shackles for the evil." He also doesn't seem to prefer killing his targets, stating that "life is precious."
Heike's power is controlling light. His Lost form (the form each Code:Breaker takes when he/she temporarily loses his/her special power due to overuse) has not been revealed, as Heike always wears a full-body metal armor to cover himself when in his Lost form, but others describe it as "something incredible".
In chapter 109, it's revealed that Heike is actually over 100 years old. He was born in the Meiji era and enlisted in the Imperial Army, all the while concealing the fact that he had a special power. At that time, the government was secretly carrying out a project to exploit the powers of power users, who were said to be of great aids to Japan in times of crisis. However, as Imperialism took over, the Imperial Army started a relentless purge of harmful and rebellious power users. It was at that time that Heike met the Code:Emperor, who were using his flames to protect fellow power users. Enchanted by the Emperor's strength, Heike joined him, and with 2 others (making them a group of four), founded Eden, an independent organization with focus on the research of special powers.
Heike's shown to have a berserk side, which Yukihina describes as being akin to a mad dog, in contrary to his usual composure and just attitude.
Rei Oogami (大神零)
The protagonist/antihero. Ogami Rei is a mysterious young boy about whom not much is known. Sakura first witnesses him burning people with a blue flame in a park; the day later he transfers to her school. When Sakura confronts him about his killings, Ogami reveals to her that he's in fact a "Code:Breaker", a secret government agent who punishes those who can't be punish by the law. His code number is 06, meaning he's the weakest member of the Code:Breakers. He believes strongly in the idea behind the Code of Hammurabi, often citing the quote "Eye for eye (目には目を, Me ni wa me wo), Tooth for tooth (歯には歯を, Ha ni wa ha wo)" and adding on "EVIL for EVIL (悪には悪を, Aku ni wa aku wo)".
Externally, Ogami is an aloof, uncaring person who is whole-heartedly dedicated to punishing evils and cares for not much else, but Sakura gets closer to him she realizes that his actions often belies his cruel words. Ogami's power lies in his left arm, which burns anything he touches with a blue flame.
It's later revealed that this blue flame is only a part of a set of seven flames, named after seven demons, which are said to "incinerate the seven deadly sins". In return for these powers, Ogami has to give up something as compensation. So far, the revealed flames are:
- Blue flame - Satan - the flame Ogami uses most often. It can incinerates everything Ogami touches. Ogami sacrifices his sense of taste for the use of this flame.
- Black flame - Belphegor a.k.a the blaze of limbo - a flame which can burn any special power "tainted with the seven deadly sins". The Code:Emperor takes the power of "Sound" Yuuki partly transfers to Ogami as payment for this flame.
When Ogami overexerted his special power, his Lost form results in a severe cold. However, it's later revealed that Ogami's true Lost form is invisibility.
Sakura Sakurakouji (桜小路 桜)
Sakura, is thought of as cute and helpless by boys who think they should protect her, but she's actually a martial arts expert and turns down guys who ask her out because they don't know the real her. Prior to the storyline, she found an old dog whose homeless owner had died a few months before the start of the story. She attempts to befriend the dog whom she promptly names "Dog". Her attempts are fruitless until Oogami comes. She is apparently an exception to Rei's fire and cannot be burned. Sakura disagrees strongly with Oogami regarding his views on people, specifically criminals, and that they are trash who need to die.
Sakura is later revealed to be the adopted child of the Sakurakouji family, and President Shibuya's biological daughter, thus she inherits his blood and is also a "rare kind", the ones with immunity to special powers and the ability to dispel them. Like a special power user, Sakura also has a Lost form: she takes a miniature form of herself, just like Shibuya. Before Shibuya gave her up to the Sakurakoujis, Sakura lived inside Eden's laboratory and met Ogami for the first time there. It's later revealed that during the incident in which Ogami's parents died, Sakura tore off Ogami's arm and thus forced him to graft the Emperor's arm onto his own to survive. It's unknown what exactly transpired in this incident, save for that many laboratory staffs died along with Ogami's parents. Although Sakura has long since forgotten about her time in Eden (even her acquaintances with veteran Eden agents like Hitomi and "The Seeking One"), this incident is deeply ingrained in her subconsciousness, and is the source of her determination to never let anyone die in front of her eyes.
Heike later reveals to Sakura that her mother is one of the 4 founders of Eden 100 years ago. The "Seeking One", when he speaks to her through a remnant of his soul left inside her body, reveals that she and Ogami are both connect to the mysterious "32nd of December", something that got him nearly killed by Eden when he tried to look into it.
