Main character

Sora Kajiwara (梶原空)
Birthday: February 4
Blood type: A
Height: 155 cm
Likes: walking, tea

A young shy girl who enjoys drawing and cats.

Kajiwara Sora lives and draws completely from the heart. She takes her sketchbook everywhere with her in her ongoing attempts to capture the transitory in her art. Sora's heightened awareness of mono-no-aware also causes her to notice very small details of the world around her and makes her a "my-pace" kind of person. She loves all the cats in the neighborhood and has named them all. As the story begins, she is painfully, extremely shy—to the point where even the most casual encounter with a stranger paralyzes her and loud voices can trigger her panic and flight. Later, she learns to open up just a bit to her friends.

Supporting

Natsumi Asou (麻生夏海)
Birthday: Oct 3
Blood type: O
Height: 158 cm

Sora's friend and classmate. They are in the same art club. Natsumi has made a number of puppets which she uses as study aid (for memory), problem-solving and substitute friends at times. Totally spontaneous, Natsumi is a perfect complement to Sora, and she's also highly interested in her friend. She has a dog, Kuro, that has two speeds: "hyper" and "off."

Hazuki Torikai (鳥飼葉月)
Height: 154 cm
Birthday: May 17
Blood type: A

Sora's other close friend at the beginning of the story, she's a reserved girl who takes "thrifty" to whole new levels. There's never any evidence that she's poor, but she can't stand to spend money, even on things she needs. She grows herbs and sprouts on her kitchen windowsill and obsesses over the loss of 100 yen when the miso she bought goes on sale the next day. The only other thing she obsesses over is the pink kitty mascot of the local bank. She is otherwise conventional, and a "straight man" to Sora and Natsumi's quirks.

Kate (ケイト)
Birthday: September 1
Blood type: O
Height: 156cm

Kate is a transfer student from Canada, and a member of class 1-10. Kate has long straight blond hair and blue eyes. She speaks Japanese quite well, and likes to show off her ability to write Kanji by writing almost everything in it, even when it isn't appropriate, such as when she wrote her own name as "keito" (毛糸), which means "yarn," and her home country's name, Canada, as Kaneda (金田), a Japanese surname.

Kate is a new member of the art club. She has a bright and cheerful personality, and becomes friends with Aso very quickly.

She has a Persian cat, named Buchi. Buchi can only speak in "cat English."

Kate likes animals, shopping, and Japanese sweets. Her dislikes are wasabi and mustard.

Kokage Kuga (空閑 木陰)
Birthday: December 19
Class: 2-10
Blood type: A
Height: 140 cm
Likes: sea urchins, salmon
Dislikes: high places, supernatural phenomena

A dark-haired girl of diminutive stature. Kuga's perpetually expressionless face and bizarre behavior suggest a morose, perhaps sinister character, but rather than depressed, withdrawn, or morbid, she is in fact playful, mischievous, and jocular (and occasionally morbid). The author suggests that her eccentricity is actually an affectation, designed to help her communicate with others. Asou and Kuga sometimes ride the train together in the manga.

Minamo Negishi (根岸 みなも)
Age: 13
Birthday: July 16
Blood type: O
Height: 139 cm

Daichi's little sister who always carries a camera with her. She's in her first year of middle school but often gets mistaken for a grade schooler. She's usually always cheerful, but has a curious habit of speaking in a very direct and spontaneous manner, not pulling any verbal punches.

She eventually joins Sora's group of friends after they meet again while Sora is on a small drawing trip in the neighborhood, which culminates in Sora borrowing Minamo's camera for a short while for sketching purposes, and then later draws a sketch of the then-sleeping Minamo. (With 30% cuteness added, at least according to Minamo herself.)

Nagisa Kurihara (栗原 渚)
Birthday: July 7
Blood type: B
Height: 147 cm
Likes: all living things, jujube, mountain peach, monkey pear, silverberry
Dislikes: wasps, leeches

Sora's senpai from the art club. She's particularly fond of nature, insects in particular, and wants to become a biotope caretaker in the future. Is often seen in the company of Juju Sasaki.

Juju Sasaki (佐々木 樹々)
Birthday: June 6
Class: Junior Class 6
Blood type: O
Height: 176cm
Likes: guitar, pickled plums, bonito shavings
Dislikes: hairy caterpillars, green caterpillars

An amazing person that surpasses even Sora in how spacey she is. The word "natural monument" surely refers to her.

Ujou Sugyou (須尭 雨情)
Birthday: September 9
Blood type: O
Height: 182cm

The art club's president, whose name is used so infrequently that newer club members not only forget what it is, but forget that he has one at all. Usually referred to as simply "Buchou" (President).

Fuu Himuro (氷室風)
Birthday: December 21
Height: 158cm
Likes: comedy, magic tricks, pantomime

She is a junior in Class 1.

Ao Kajiwara (梶原 青)

Kajiwara Sora's younger brother. Takes care of his 'nee-chan', and makes some effort to regulate, or at the very least comprehend, her singular behavior.

Hiyori Kasugano (春日野日和)
Birthday: July 31
Blood type: B
Height: 163 cm

The art club's teacher and possibly the most childish of all the people you can find in the art club. While she can be immature, or even overtly cynical at times, she's a generally good-natured woman and will often make personal arrangements for her students, at least as far as her abilities (and the club budget) allows. She has a rather large interest in chickens, owning an actual live rooster named P-chan, but also a large number of rooster plushies.

Soyogi Asakura (朝倉 そよぎ)
A friend of Kasugano Hiyori-sensei and a fellow art teacher at Kajiwara Sora's high school, Asakura-sensei is introduced in Chapter 44. She's a talented magician and has demonstrated the capacity to perform extraordinary feats of skill. She has served as a mentor to the Suzukaze combo, Ryou and Fuu, who address her as "shishou" (master) and continue to augment their repertoire of tricks and gags by emulating her. Asakura-sensei keeps a pet dove named Kururu which sometimes figures in her magic act. Her hairstyle is intended as a cross between Ryou's and Fuu's.

Tsukiyo Ooba (大庭 月夜)
Birthday: November 13
Blood type: A
Height: 162cm

A second-year student who rarely shows up to art club, and has unkempt hair with long bangs which hang over and conceal her face (not to mention, obstruct her vision). These factors contribute to her apparent anonymity and forgettability, as other members of the art club often fail to recognize her, both facetiously and otherwise. She evidently specializes in oil painting and the cup-and-ball.

She appears in the background in various episodes of the animation, but is not introduced until the final episode.
