Synopsis: This is an autobiography of the author, whose real name is Akiko Hayashi, which begins while she's in her third year of high school. Through her friend Futami, Akiko starts going to an art class led by Kenzou Hidaka, an intimidating teacher who spends much of his time yelling at his students and keeping them focused on drawing with the use of a bamboo sword. Akiko is initially confused by the behavior of the teacher and her fellow students in the class, but she keeps going regardless, eventually becoming the manga author she is today.

Background: In 2015, Kakukaku Shikajika won the Manga Taisho Award as well as the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards Grand Prize.

Side notes: I hope that I'm not too early adding already one Award winning work in here.^-^ I thought about that when I started to adding these posts... but well never mind.XDDD Award winning or not that shouldn't be the reason why to pick up a manga to read although it can be an indicator of the quality of the story. I myself am enjoying the story and art is also something that I like. It's easy to see why this manga got it's great resumé although I'm not so keen about the cover art.^-^

Akiko Higashimura (Japanese: 東村 アキコ Hepburn: Higashimura Akiko, born October 15, 1975) is a Japanese manga artist from Miyazaki, Japan. She debuted in the Japanese seinen manga magazine Weekly Morning and later became more notable for her manga Kisekae Yuka-chan which debuted in You magazine. In 2008, she drew the one-shot Chuō-Sen Cinema Paradise for the magazine Jump SQ. She was nominated for the Manga Taishō in 2008 for Himawari: Kenichi Legend, in 2009 for Mama wa Tenparist, and in 2011 for Omo ni Naitemasu. In 2015, she won the Manga Taishō for Kakukaku Shikajika. Her younger brother Takuma Morishige is the author of the manga My Neighbor Seki (Tonari no Seki-kun).
Kenzou Hidaka (日高 健三)
He teaches the extra mural art class which Akiko starts attending. An intimidating teacher who spends much of his time yelling at his students and keeping them focused on drawing with the use of a bamboo sword.
Kakukaku Shikajika was written in memory of Kenzou Hidaka.
