After falling in love with a traditional comic storyteller's rendition of the story called "Shinigami," he is determined to become his apprentice. The performer, Yakumo, has never taken an apprentice before, but to everyone's surprise, he accepts the eager ex-prisoner, nicknaming him "Yotarou."
As Yotarou happily begins his new life, he meets others in Yakumo's life, including Yakumo's ward Konatsu. Konatsu was the daughter of a famous storyteller, and Yakumo took her in after her father's tragic death. Konatsu loved her father's storytelling, and would love to become a performer in her own right—but that path is not available for women.

Side notes: Yup and anime pick at the first that comes to mind but this is also a new series that has been translated. Well there isn't more than one chapter done so there isn't much to tell... if not willing to go over and check out the marvellous anime too.^-¨

Main character
Yotarou (与太郎)
An ex-con who takes up rakugo after being inspired by the 8th Yakumo Yurakutei. He is referred to as "Kyoji" by his boss.
After getting out of prison he located Yakumo and begged the rakugo master to take him in. Eventually, Yotaro (as he came to be known by Yakumo) does get kicked out once, but stays, bound by Yakumo's promises after Konatsu pleads for Yakumo to take him back in.
After being promoted to shinuchi, Yotaro gets his head shaved.
Supporting
Konatsu (小夏)
She is Sukeroku Yuurakutei's daughter and would have loved to become a performer in her own right—but that path was not available for women.
She normally fights back against what Yakumo says and wants, and will exhibit this sort of behaviour to anyone else she doesn't trust. She is also a great teacher of rakugo, although somewhat stern. Due to her complicated relationship with Yakumo, Konatsu normally doesn't obey him. However, when she is caught off guard by the truth, Yakumo can get her to work with him.
She became pregnant around the time Yotaro became a shinuchi.

Yakumo Yuurakutei (有楽亭 八雲)
He is a rakugo master who was originally a dancer, but ruined his leg in an accident so he has to use a cane. This damaged leg also made his mother give him to Yakumo the 7th, but did not stop him from anything else.
He started a new life learning rakugo along with Sukeroku. Initially his style was flawless in execution but had no feeling so he had to look for his own style in order to improve and get to know himself better.
Sukeroku Yuurakutei (有楽亭 助六)
Yuurakutei Sukeroku (Hatsutaro) is a shin'uchi under the Yuurakutei name, serving under the then-current head, Yuurakutei Yakumo. Abandoned and penniless as a child, he found himself drawn to the rakugo theater under the tutelage of a mysterious figure named Sukeroku. He eventually becomes an apprentice to Yakumo under the name "Hatsutaro," serving in a dual apprenticeship alongside Bon, a shy boy with an injured leg. Having grown up on the streets and learning rakugo from both Sukeroku and Yakumo, Hatsutaro quickly rises to the top of the rakugo world, shaking up the status quo and causing rakugo to evolve.
