Side notes: As you might have guessed I saw the anime first and after that decided to check the manga 'cause I really didn't get the anime much. But I'll add my thought here a bit later 'cause I'm having a bit fever now and don't feel so well.>.<

Main characters

Aika Fuwa (不破 愛花)
Aika was Mahiro's sister that was brutally murdered. She had a tendency to quote famous books such as "Hamlet" and "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare.

She secretly dated Yoshino, whom she deeply loved.

In the flashback during chapter 22 she stated that the only person who can go out with her is Yoshino and that she won't consider dating anyone else, even if Yoshino liked another person.

Mahiro is someone very important and special to her too, but not in a romantic way.

In chapter 37 it is revealed that Aika was the strongest magician of all. Aika was the Magician of Zetsuen before Hanemura and was more powerful than Hakaze. She committed suicide after meeting Hakaze, who came from the future to save Mahiro and Yoshino's futures.

Before dying she records a video for Mahiro and Yoshino where she tells them how important they are to her and how happy her time with them was.

She is based on Ophelia and Sycorax, characters from Shakespeare's plays.

Yoshino Takigawa (滝川吉野)
Yoshino was living a normal highschool life until he meets a Evangeline Yamato while he was visiting the grave of a family friend. His world is then changed as he decides to help his friend and save the world. Yoshino is calm and clever who is brave and strong. He is the type to make calculative judgements before making any decisions.

Despite his good guy facade; Yoshino is actually very manipulative and deceitful as explained by Mahiro in the countless times he betrayed him; It is due to this nature that Samon asks Mahiro to kill Yoshino in fear that he will manipulate Hakaze to alter the world to his choosing.

He breaks down after Hakaze pushes him on showing his real emotions and to stop hiding everything from everyone else.

In the final chapter we see him passing his university entrance exam with Mahiro.
He tells Hakaze that there are lots of other guys out there better than him but Hakaze still won't give up on him.

Hakaze Kusaribe (鎖部 葉風)
The princess of the sorcerers and the strongest sorceress in history, she was left in a deserted island to die by the leader of Kusaribe clan, Samon.

Since the Island did not allow the use of magic, she joins Mahiro's quest to avenge Aika's death, and her own revenge against Samon. She talks to Mahiro and Yoshino through a wooded doll necklace.

Hakaze's setup and behavior includes allusions to Prospero, the main character from Shakespeare's play The Tempest, who just like her, is a magician betrayed by his servants and left for dead on a deserted island.

After the events in Mt. Fuji where Yoshino completely turned around an argument against Samon, and helping Hakaze get out of the island, Hakaze takes a great liking to him, and as the series goes on, she falls in love further with him, and eventually does everything for Yoshino because of her love towards him. She even abandons the Tree of Genesis and helps out with the plan to destroy it. At the very end of the series, there is a hint that Hakaze goes out with Yoshino.

Mahiro Fuwa (不破 真広)
Mahiro Fuwa has left a month ago to find his family's killer without any clues to who it might be. When Yoshino is held at gun-point, Mahiro comes out of nowhere and swiftly saves him and can stop bullets in mid-air, claiming to have a deal with a sorceress; not just any, but the strongest sorceress, Hakaze Kusaribe, who promised to help find his family's killer with her magic so he can kill the killer himself. After saving Yoshino, Mahiro informs him about the epidemic, a curse that turns living things into metal, claiming Kusaribe clan plans to revive the Tree of Zetsuen that could destroy the world.

Despite dating many older women, the only one Mahiro ever truly loved was Aika, something that he himself has trouble accepting and passing off his desire for her not to date anyone as simply him being a protective brother.

He starts to consider the fact that he truly loved her after Hanemura's statement about his obsession toward Aika.

When Hakaze falls in love with Yoshino, he is asked by Samon to kill Yoshino in fear that Yoshino will use that love to manipulate Hakaze into altering the world. However Mahiro declines saying that despite his betrayals he will look out for Yoshino because they are friends.
Even after discovering that Yoshino was Aika's boyfriend he still doesn't get angry with him nor desires to get revenge on Yoshino.

Mahiro has taught Hanemura how to control his magic and how to use it in combat, bullying him and beating him in the process. Hanemura was the main suspect of being Aika's killer but even so Mahiro developed a deep friendship with him.

After watching Aika's video he goes with Yoshino to the Fuwa grave, where he stated that he won’t live like Aika, who thought she’d live in a play someone else wrote. He said he’ll write his own script and live how he wants.

He also says that once Yoshino has a new girlfriend, he’ll be a stranger to Aika, but Mahiro will always be her big brother.

In the final chapter of the manga we see that he entered university with Yoshino and has a girlfriend called Hayashi Mimori, who happens to be the girl he saved from the iron syndrome before the start of the series.

Supporting

Samon Kusaribe (鎖部 左門)
Part of the Kusaribe Clan, Samon believes that the Tree of Beginning will bring the end of the world and the only way to stop it is awakening the Tree of Zetsuen. Because he didn't want Hakaze to interfere, he leaves her stuck on a deserted island.
